Greek walnut kataifi


  • Kataifi dough 800 gr tear apart the shreds
  • Walnuts 350 gr slightly chopped
  • Butter 300 gr melted
  • Cinnamon 2 tablespoons
  • Caster sugar 1 tablespoon
For the syrup
  • Water 1600 ml
  • Sugar 1500 gr
  • Lemon 1/2 of its juice


In a pan boil the water with the sugar and the lemon peel for 25 –  30 minutes at high heat,during the last 5 minutes add the lemon juice and let it cool.In a blender ground the walnuts slightly,add the cinnamon and the caster sugar,mix and set aside.Tear apart the kataifi shreds and cut it slightly with a knife.Divide it into two parts.Melt the butter.Sprinkle half of the kataifi with half of the melted butter,stir until it is buttered well and spread it in a roasting pan,tearing it apart,it should spread evenly.Press it well with your hand and add the ground walnuts mixed with the cinnamon and the caster sugar.Then sprinkle the remaining kataifi with the remaining butter,mix well and spread it on top( see photos below )Press it well and bake in preheated oven for 40 – 45 minutes at 190 degrees( depending on the oven )until it browns on both sides ( when it browns on top turn it upside down to brown on the other side too ).Remove it from the oven,cut it into pieces and pour the cold syrup over the warm kataifi.Leave it to absorb the syrup,garnish with some walnuts and it is ready to enjoy it.
