Ingredients
- Phyllo pastry 2 packages
- Bread crumbs 1/2 kg
- Walnuts 300 gr
- Olive oil 1 1/2 cup ( or 700 gr fresh butter )
- Cinnamon 1 1/2 teaspoon ( or clove )
- Sugar 1 cup
- Lemon 1 ( only the zest )
- Cloves
For the syrup
- Sugar 1700 gr
- Water 5 cups
- Lemon 3 tablespoons
Instructions
In a rectangular roasting pan,layer 7 greased phyllo pastry sheets.In a bowl mix the bread crumbs,the walnuts,the sugar,the cinnamon and the lemon zest.Mix the ingredients and pour some of the mixture on the layered sheets.Then layer on top 7 more greased sheets and add some of the mixture until the sheets are covered.Follow the same procedure until all the mixture is used.Cover on top with 7 greased sheets,score them with a knife and stud each piece in the center with a whole clove per piece.Sprinkle some water on top and bake it for 60 minutes approximately at medium heat.Prepare the syrup,in a pan boil the water,the sugar and the lemon juice.When the baklava is baked and browned on top,let is cool for a while,then pour the hot syrup over it and let it cool.Instead of walnuts you can use almonds.
